Michigan Startup Slate Unveils Innovative EV Inspired by Transformers

Slate, a Michigan-based, Black-owned startup, is disrupting the electric vehicle (EV) space. They are introducing a new concept vehicle that attempts to change how we think about automotive design. The company has nailed down some big investment backing, including support from Jeff Bezos. In its Series B funding round late last year, it wrangled investor interest by playing up the “Transformer” metaphor. Having raised well over $100 million since it was founded in 2022, Slate is treading ground that has the potential to blow up the industry.

The company recently showcased a concept version of its truck disguised as a two-door SUV, branded under the fictitious business “Rockabye Rides.” This innovative vehicle was parked in Venice, California, drawing attention and curiosity from passersby. Plus, the main “Rockabye Rides” website has a countdown to a seemingly-related event coming soon, promising more news from Slate.

Slate’s event will take place April 24 at Long Beach Airport. Attendees can expect to learn more about this next generation vehicle that’s sure to be thrilling! The startup has briefed several automotive journalists ahead of this unveiling, generating buzz around its unique design and customizable features. Slate has said it wants to make its EV accessible, with a target price tag of about $25,000. This new pricing should open it up to a lot more people.

Until last week when TechCrunch published reports about Bezos’ financial role, Slate has been flying pretty much under the radar. The startup’s truck design has been spotted in various silhouettes, including a two-door pickup and a hatchback that closely resembles Rivian’s upcoming R3 model.

Now in a bold move, Slate has filed for a trademark on the slogan “We Built It.” This moonshot makes evidence of their intense commitment to innovation and customization on a grand scale. By building vehicles to buyer specifications, the company allows buyers to order the perfect vehicle for their lifestyle and preferences, creating pride of ownership for consumers.

David Tracy, an automotive journalist, expressed his astonishment at Slate’s creation, stating, “is unlike any new vehicle I’ve ever seen not just in my decade as a car journalist, but in my entire lifetime.”

We can’t wait for Slate’s big reveal! This new startup certainly is unique in its ambitious vision and its potential to change the trajectory of EVs moving forward.
