Mike Hesson Appointed as Pakistan’s White-Ball Coach

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Mike Hesson as the new head coach for its white-ball teams, a move aimed at revitalizing the squad ahead of an upcoming series against Bangladesh. Hesson – well known for his successful era with New Zealand – replaces Aqib Javed. Javed, who has been director of high performance since November, succeeds the long-serving and venerable Dave Findlay.

Hesson had previously guided New Zealand to the 50-overs World Cup final in 2015. Now, he carries all that experience to his new role. He was the head coach of the New Zealand national team for six years. All through that time, he developed a widely-held reputation for designing winning football teams. Given the enormous value of international experience, this is international experience we have in spades. He’s coached a variety of domestic teams and franchises, notably Kenya and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League.

Naqvi highlighted the importance of Hesson’s leadership in shaping the future of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket.

Hesson’s new role comes at a critical juncture for Pakistan cricket. The national team will be hosting Bangladesh for five T20 Internationals towards the end of this month. It’s especially important for Hesson to be able to pivot and be agile in executing his strategies.

Aqib Javed, recently appointed as PCB’s director of high performance, served as Pakistan’s interim red-ball coach. He was the obvious choice to replace Jason Gillespie, who resigned in December. Javed took over from Gary Kirsten, who had stepped down from his role as head coach after the shambolic spell in charge that lasted just six months. Javed’s interim appointment followed a period of instability within the coaching staff, making Hesson’s appointment a strategic decision by the PCB to ensure continuity and success moving forward.

Hesson is the head coach of Islamabad United, the reigning champions of the Pakistan Super League. The year-round contract means that he’s very sharp on the dynamic nature of both domestic cricket and international cricket.

Hesson currently serves as the head coach of Islamabad United, the defending champions of the Pakistan Super League, and his dual role may provide valuable insights into both domestic and international cricket dynamics.
