India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is setting the stage for a two-day visit to Washington, commencing this Wednesday, with plans to announce additional tariff cuts. This development comes as the United States, particularly under President Donald Trump's administration, voices concerns over India's high tariffs, which, according to Kevin Hassett, the White House economic adviser, effectively lock out imports. The focus on tariffs has become a central issue as the United States seeks to address what it perceives as unfair trade practices.
Kevin Hassett's comments, made during an interview with CNBC on Monday, highlighted the disparity in tariff levels between the United States and many of its trading partners. He stated that almost every trading partner imposes much higher tariffs than the United States does. This includes major economies such as Canada, Mexico, and Britain, which have tariffs in a similar range to those of the United States. The economic adviser emphasized that President Trump believes in imposing reciprocal tariffs that are at least equal to those levied by other countries.
