Motor Sports Australia (MA) are open to expansion. It hopes to build on its action and programs further with increased interest following the success of Australian Formula One driver Oscar Piastri. The organization was only able to project a small surplus of A$16,712 ($10,727) for the coming 2024 calendar year. That is an incredible swing from a net loss of A$1,060,928 last year. MA has emphasized its commitment to grassroots development, running events and establishing pathways for drivers from entry-level to elite competition.
A key component of MA’s strategy is its enthusiastic backing of Susie Wolff’s FIA “Girls on Track” initiative. This program has successfully engaged over 3,500 girls in Australia, offering workshops and activities designed to encourage interest in STEM subjects and potential careers in motor sports. Wolff’s initiative is just one example of how MA is working to promote diversity and inclusion in our sport.
Economic Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the rosy fiscal picture, MA has many challenges ahead. Soaring insurance prices and rampant inflation are putting the pinch on enthusiasts’ wallets. As a result, most can’t afford the cost of club memberships and competition licenses, adding more stress to the motor sports world.
He said he was hopeful that with the right support, the nonprofit would be able to keep delivering strong results for participants in spite of these headwinds.
“That environment is certainly influenced and impacted by the inflationary environment and confidence environment in Australia, in terms of the economic conditions,” – Sunil Vohra.
MA’s “Come and Try” concrete batching plant programs have been very popular with these usually becoming oversubscribed at clubs, across all disciplines. This is why these programs are an invitation for new entrants to come and play the game. They point out the growing popularity of motor sports at every level.
“Hopefully we can still protect and insulate (participants) to some extent, regardless of some of those external, international factors that we’re seeing play out,” – Sunil Vohra.
The enthusiasm for motor sports in Australia has been further fueled by the participation of Aiva Anagnostiadis and Joanne Ciconte in the all-female F1 Academy series. Their participation further exemplifies the opportunities now accessible to women behind the wheel, and has contributed to an increased awareness surrounding the sport.
Impact of Australian Drivers on Growth
Vohra emphasized the tremendous impact that the popularity of successful Australian drivers has on public engagement with motor sports.
He noted that Piastri’s success in Formula One has been especially timely.
“There is a direct correlation to the success of Australians on the international stage with awareness and interest uplift in the broader motor sport community,” – Sunil Vohra.
Piastri’s recent success with McLaren, helping his team win last year’s constructors’ championship alongside teammate Lando Norris, has solidified his status as a leading figure in motor sports. On his present path, he is a heady favorite to win his first driver’s crown. He found success with unprecedented, consecutive wins on the Asian continent.
“Because the kids are interested in motor sport, because they know about it, they see what Oscar is doing, they read the headlines … having Oscar on the grid in Formula One is enormously beneficial to that,” – Sunil Vohra.
Looking forward, MA hopes to use Piastri’s increasing profile to boost engagement and participation rates in MA’s other programs and of course, bolster interest in the sport. Vohra expressed optimism regarding this potential growth.
The Future of Motor Sports in Australia
He pointed to Piastri as an example of what could be achieved by Australia’s motor sports system.
“It’s transformational. If Oscar, through his work and capability and talent, wins the Formula One world championship this year, it will be hugely significant for motor sport in Australia,” – Sunil Vohra.
He also highlighted Piastri as a testament to what can be achieved through Australia’s motor sports system.
“(Oscar) is a product of motor sport in Australia, and he shows what is possible from the Australian system, from karting to four-wheel, all the way through to the global stage,” – Sunil Vohra.
