Myanmar Begins Repatriation of Hundreds from Scam Centers

Myanmar has initiated the repatriation process for hundreds of foreigners detained in scam compounds, with the first groups sent home over the past few days. On Saturday, a third group of 111 Chinese nationals was handed over to authorities for repatriation via the Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Bridge 2, located in the Thai border town of Mae Sot. This follows two earlier batches that were flown out on Thursday and Friday. The operation marks a significant step in addressing the complex transnational crime of scam centers within Myanmar.

The repatriation process on Saturday began with 50 Chinese nationals boarding a flight at 10:40 am (0340 GMT). The remaining members of the group were expected to leave on two additional flights throughout the day. Myanmar's junta confirmed the repatriation through an official statement, emphasizing their commitment to resolving this issue. The initiative demonstrates cooperation between Myanmar, China, and Thailand, as they work together to dismantle these criminal networks.

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai described the scam center situation as a "complex transnational crime." He directed senior Thai police to strengthen border control measures in response. Meanwhile, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun praised the collaboration with Thailand and Myanmar, referring to it as "thunder-style cooperation." The Chinese government and state media have labeled the individuals being repatriated as "suspects," highlighting the international nature of the crackdown.

Many of those released from these scam centers claim they were misled into working there and subsequently held against their will. The Myanmar government took measures to shut down these operations by cutting fuel supplies and electricity to suspected scam hubs. This decisive action underscores their resolve to eradicate the illegal activities stemming from these centers.

Live footage broadcasted by Thai media outlet The Reporters captured individuals disembarking from two double-decker coaches before boarding a Southern China Airlines plane. This visual testimony underscored the gravity and scale of the repatriation effort.
