In a significant move, Myanmar began the repatriation of thousands of foreigners trapped in scam compounds, with 300 Chinese nationals handed over for repatriation on February 21, 2025. The operation, coordinated by Myanmar's junta, utilized the Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Bridge 2 at Mae Sot, Thailand. This initial group marks the start of a broader effort expected to see many more foreigners returning home in the coming weeks. The Chinese government has labeled these individuals as "suspects" in their ongoing crackdown against cross-border scams.
The repatriation process involves close cooperation between China, Myanmar, and Thailand, dubbed "thunder-style cooperation" by Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun. On February 21, the first batch of 50 Chinese nationals boarded a flight at 10:40 am local time (3:40 am GMT), with five additional flights departing throughout the day. A second group followed on Friday via the same logistical route, with a final set of flights anticipated on Saturday. Chinese police officers accompany these flights to ensure proper handover procedures.

The repatriated individuals were shown in state media reports being escorted off planes in China, handcuffed and dressed in brown jumpsuits. Many of those freed report being duped into working at these scam centres and held against their will. The operation underscores the broader regional efforts to dismantle these illegal operations.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with her Laotian counterpart to discuss strategies for combating scam centres along their shared border. In parallel, the Thai government announced plans to collect biometric data from repatriated Chinese nationals. This measure aims to prevent Thailand from being used as a criminal transit hub in the future.
The Chinese government has expressed satisfaction with the collaborative efforts that made these operations possible. The coordinated action between China, Myanmar, and Thailand reflects an intensified regional commitment to addressing cross-border crime.
