This resolution comes after more than two years of significant holdups. Those holdups were attributed to national security issues and differing opinions on spectrum allocation between two powerful players in the telecom industry.
Elon Musk needs no introduction, from his innovative companies in aerospace and clean energy. Since then he has been deeply lobbying for an allocation approach that favors satellite internet operations in India. Meanwhile, SpaceX—via its Starlink brand—is on a mission to provide high-speed broadband to rural and underserved communities. This initiative dovetails beautifully with New Delhi’s stated desire to expand digital connectivity across the country.

As the leader of one of India’s largest telecommunications companies, Reliance Jio, Ambani advocates for a more regulated approach to airwave distribution that would protect his company’s interests while ensuring fair competition in the market.
Musk and Ambani’s spat has illustrated the difficulties of starting up a satellite internet operation. In a nation where corporate interests wield tremendous influence, these challenges are amplified. The Indian government’s prolonged clearance process reflects its cautious stance on national security, particularly concerning foreign entities entering critical infrastructure sectors.
Following months of talks and haggling, New Delhi surprisingly came down in favor of Musk’s allocation method. This decision is a monumental decision in the context of India’s satellite internet operations. This would open the door for Starlink to finally bring its services to the country.
More recently, the hurdles for airwave distribution have highlighted the cutthroat competition in India’s telecom industry. Now Musk’s Starlink is preparing to go to market. In reply, Reliance Jio will no doubt make counter moves to secure its lead.
