New Zealand Rugby Coach Open to Talks with League Star Kalyn Ponga

New Zealand rugby coach Scott Robertson has expressed openness to engaging in discussions with Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga. Despite being contracted with the Knights until the end of 2027, Ponga's playing future has fueled intense media speculation across Australia and New Zealand.

The intrigue surrounding Ponga has been heightened by his past expressions of interest in joining the All Blacks. Notably, the Knights captain has not yet represented either Australia or New Zealand in a rugby league test, while both the Kangaroos and Kiwis coaches have shown interest in his talents.

Robertson acknowledged Ponga's previous interest in the All Blacks, stating:

"He’s done it a few years ago as well, showing his interest," – Scott Robertson

Kalyn Ponga's situation remains uncertain as Reuters was unable to reach him for comment on Wednesday, and the Knights were also unavailable for immediate comment. The speculation draws parallels to other players like Sonny Bill Williams, who successfully transitioned from test rugby league to rugby union, winning two World Cups with the All Blacks during his 58-test career.

New Zealand Rugby (NZR), the nation's governing body for rugby union, has a history of enticing league talent to switch codes. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, for instance, made a similar switch in 2022, earning three All Blacks caps before returning to the NRL with the New Zealand Warriors last year.
