New Zealand Seeks Glory with New Faces Ahead of World Cup

As a point of reference, New Zealand’s rugby team is currently third in the world. With their World Cup on the horizon, they’re bracing for a hot, heavy stretch of fixtures. That tournament begins in August and September and will be an equally difficult endeavor. The very same team that came so close last year is hungry to win their seventh title! The Black Ferns will face Australia, Canada and the United States on consecutive weekends starting May 10th. This is arguably the most important and often overlooked step in their prep.

Allan Bunting, the head coach of New Zealand, has announced a squad that includes three uncapped players: Braxton Sorensen-McGee, Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu, and Vici-Rose Green. At only 18 years old, Sorensen-McGee is an exciting glimpse into a new generation of talent. Mahutariki-Fakalelu, noted for her strength as a prop, and Green, a skilled hooker, are set to make their mark on the international stage.

Notable Absences and Returns

Not even World Cup-winning fullback Renee Holmes was able to make the cut for the 33-woman squad. Another lock, Chelsea Bremner also failed to make the cut. At the same time, their exclusion highlights just how competitive the selection process has become.

Portia had a stellar comeback to the squad. She just came out of retirement last month! Woodman-Wickliffe, a twice World Player of the Year, brings invaluable experience to the squad as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

Bunting spoke to the challenges of the selection process in a recent public statement.

“It’s a tight race leading up to our World Cup campaign and we know we’ve had to make tough calls at this point.” – Allan Bunting

Emphasis on Team Cohesion

Bunting’s strategy is evident with the inclusion of Sevens players Theresa Setefano, Dhys Faleafaga, Jorja Miller, Stacey Waaka and Risaleaana Pouri-Lane. His focus has been on integrating varied skill sets into the roster for increased strength and versatility. He emphasized the importance of building not just a squad of 33 but a cohesive group that can adapt and grow together.

“I’ve been very impressed by the response and attitude from our players to still serve the team. Our whole group is important on this journey; there is still a bit more water to go under the bridge before we name our World Cup squad.” – Allan Bunting

Bunting’s attention to detail, organized approach and drive for success. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is only a few months away! As such, every game played leading up to it will be critical for establishing the team’s direction, timbre and tactics.
