Nicolas Cage captivated the audience at the Saturn Awards in Universal City, California, on Sunday, February 2, as he accepted the best actor in a film prize for his performance in "Dream Scenario." Cage expressed deep gratitude to his director, Kristoffer Borgli, and thanked the audience for recognizing the film. In a poignant moment, he paid tribute to the late moviemaker David Lynch, who passed away last month at the age of 78. The enthusiasm in the room reminded Cage of his cherished collaborations with Lynch.
Cage's acceptance speech took a reflective turn when he addressed concerns about artificial intelligence in the film industry. He issued a heartfelt plea to fellow actors, urging them not to let AI technology compromise their craft. Cage believes that allowing AI to manipulate performances poses a threat to the integrity and truthfulness of art.
"The job of all art in my view, film performance included, is to hold a mirror to the external and internal stories of the human condition through the very human thoughtful and emotional process of recreation."
Cage has previously voiced his apprehension regarding body scans used in the TV series "Spider-Man Noir," fearing that images of his likeness could be repurposed for unintended uses. This concern fueled his call for artists to guard against AI interference.
"A robot can't do that. If we let robots do that, it will lack all heart and eventually lose edge and turn to mush. There will be no human response to life as we know it. It will be life as robots tell us to know it."
Cage believes that even minimal AI manipulation can erode the authenticity of artistic expression. He warned that financial interests might overshadow artistic integrity if AI becomes prevalent in performance manipulation, turning creativity into a mere commodity.
"I say, protect yourselves from AI interfering with your authentic and honest expressions."
The audience responded enthusiastically to Cage's passionate remarks, underscoring the resonance of his message within the entertainment community. His tribute to David Lynch and appeal for artistic safeguarding struck a chord with many present.
