The fediverse, an open social web powered by the ActivityPub protocol, is gaining momentum as users seek alternatives to centralized social media platforms. Canadian developer Daniel Supernault is at the forefront of this movement, spearheading a Kickstarter campaign to fund his suite of apps, including Pixelfed, Loops, and Sup. These apps serve as decentralized alternatives to platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp. The campaign aims to raise $1 million or more to hire a small team and expand the development of these open social communities.
Pixelfed, a photo-sharing app similar to Instagram, has been a part of the fediverse for years. However, it only recently launched its 1.0 version mobile app earlier this month. Meanwhile, Loops, which serves as an alternative to TikTok, is still in the alpha testing phase on Apple's TestFlight. Despite their nascent stages, these apps are part of a larger fediverse movement that has seen significant growth in recent years. Over 200,000 users have already joined Pixelfed.social, making it one of the most popular platforms in this network.
Mastodon remains the largest server in the fediverse, with Mastodon.social following closely behind. However, Supernault has ambitious goals for his applications. He envisions them becoming the first in the fediverse to reach a billion users. To support this vision, the Kickstarter campaign will not only fund the development of existing apps but also a new blogging app as an alternative to platforms like Tumblr or LiveJournal.
The campaign has already raised $58,383, surpassing its initial goal. This funding will allow Supernault to expand storage, content delivery networks (CDNs), and computing power necessary to accommodate the growing user base. Additionally, it will enable him to dedicate more time and resources to developing these apps and contributing to the fediverse's overall growth.

Supernault's initiative comes at a time when many users are increasingly disillusioned with social media platforms controlled by billionaires such as Elon Musk and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg. The fediverse offers a decentralized alternative where users can engage in social interactions without the constraints and data privacy concerns associated with centralized platforms.
The Kickstarter campaign reflects a broader trend where individuals are looking for more autonomy over their online presence. By supporting open-source initiatives like those led by Supernault, users can contribute to a more democratic digital landscape. The fundraised money will help Supernault and his team enhance their capabilities and infrastructure to sustain the fediverse's rapid growth.
