OpenAI has expanded the availability of its AI agent, Operator, to a number of countries, enhancing the digital experience for users. Launched in January in the United States, Operator is now accessible to ChatGPT Pro subscribers in countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and the U.K. However, subscribers in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland will not have access to this new tool.
Operator offers users a convenient way to complete tasks such as booking tickets, making restaurant reservations, filing expense reports, or shopping online. Despite its capabilities, the AI tool is presently limited to those on the $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan. OpenAI's decision to offer Operator in most regions where ChatGPT is available, excluding certain European countries, marks a significant expansion of their AI agent tools.
The introduction of Operator comes amid intense competition in the AI agent market. Companies like Google, Anthropic, and Rabbit are also innovating in this space. Google's project remains on a waitlist, reflecting a different strategy in rolling out its AI tools. Meanwhile, Anthropic provides access to its agentic interface through an API, and Rabbit restricts its action model to users who own its device.
OpenAI's strategic rollout of Operator highlights the growing demand for AI-driven task management solutions. As users seek more efficient ways to manage daily tasks, Operator's availability in key markets positions OpenAI as a strong contender in the AI landscape. The exclusion of certain European countries from Operator's availability may impact the reach of OpenAI's latest innovation but aligns with regulatory considerations and strategic priorities.
