A shocking incident unfolded on Friday, when Ahmad Nor Al Faizan Jusoh, 47, lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a roadside noodle stall. Ahmad, who has learning difficulties, held a Malaysian Department of Social Welfare card confirming his disability. Instead of receiving assistance, he became the victim of a violent assault by multiple individuals, including the stall vendor.
The attack involved one of the suspects smearing oily noodles on Ahmad's face. As he attempted to clean himself with rainwater, another individual kicked him in the face. Despite the crowded market area, no one stepped forward to assist Ahmad during the ordeal. The assault, captured on video, went viral over the weekend causing widespread anger and igniting a debate on the treatment of vulnerable individuals in Malaysia.
Public outrage intensified not only because of the brutality of the attack but also due to the apathy displayed by bystanders who failed to intervene. The distressing footage showed a market area filled with people who witnessed the incident yet chose not to act. This has raised questions about societal responsibility and empathy towards individuals with disabilities.
The police acted swiftly in response to the public outcry. On Sunday evening, authorities made an arrest, detaining a man in his 30s in connection with the incident. Kemaman Acting District Police Chief Wan Muhamad Wan Ja’afar reported the arrest and provided further details about the investigation.
“So far, four men have been arrested, including three men aged between 18 and 60, on the day of the incident to assist in the investigation,” – Wan Muhamad Wan Ja’afar
The arrests mark a significant step in addressing the brutal assault that has shocked Malaysia. As investigations continue, there are calls for justice and systemic changes to ensure better protection and support for vulnerable individuals like Ahmad.
