Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has been impeached by the lower house on charges of culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, other high crimes, and betrayal of public trust. The charges were brought against her on Wednesday, marking a significant political development in the country. Duterte, a former city mayor and prosecutor, has been preparing for this impeachment process since last year. Amidst the tumultuous political landscape, she expressed openness to having her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, join her defense team "if he wants to."
The Senate president indicated that the trial could commence in June. For Duterte to be convicted and removed from her position, two-thirds of the Senate must vote in favor at the trial. Her legal team is already gearing up for the impending proceedings in the Senate. Despite the gravity of the situation, Duterte has not yet read the complaint against her, which was endorsed by a majority of lower house members.
Duterte has consistently denied any assassination threat allegations and dismissed previous moves against her as politically motivated. She has been embroiled in a long-running conflict with former ally Marcos, further complicating her political standing. In response to the current impeachment scenario, she remarked, "God save the Philippines," before addressing questions from journalists.
Her father, Rodrigo Duterte, who served as the Philippine president from 2016 to 2022 and is currently 79 years old, could potentially play a role in her defense. However, Sara Duterte emphasized that his involvement would depend on his own interest. As she navigates these challenges, she remains focused on her defense strategy and the upcoming trial.
"We're not there yet. Those things are still too far off." – Sara Duterte
