Authorities in the Philippines have arrested Deng Yuanqing, a Chinese national suspected of being a "sleeper agent," according to Cybercrime chief Jeremy Lotoc. Deng, who has resided in the Philippines for approximately five years based on his passport, was detained along with two Filipino companions in Makati City on January 17. His arrest has raised concerns about potential espionage activities within the country.
Deng, described by National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) officials as a "control engineering" specialist, was reportedly affiliated with the Army Engineering University of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), a prominent military institution located in Nanjing, China. The PLA's involvement has added an international dimension to the case, emphasizing the significance of Deng's apprehension.
Law enforcement and military officials presented Deng and his two Filipino associates at a press conference in Manila on Monday. Cybercrime chief Jeremy Lotoc stated that the case is being investigated in connection with cybercrime activities. This investigation is being conducted under the auspices of the country's Cybercrime Law, which provides legal frameworks for prosecuting such offenses.
The arrest was the culmination of a coordinated effort by the NBI and other law enforcement entities. The case underscores ongoing concerns about foreign nationals potentially engaging in cybercrime activities within the Philippines.
