Philippines Eyes Submarines to Fortify Defense Against China’s Maritime Expansion

The Philippines is preparing to bolster its underwater deterrence capability by acquiring two submarines, a strategic move aimed at countering China's escalating military activities in the West Philippine Sea. The decision comes amid growing concerns over China's military build-up in the region. On Wednesday, General Romeo Brawner Jnr, the Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), announced this ambitious plan, underscoring the nation's urgent need to enhance its maritime defense capabilities.

General Brawner Jnr expressed the country's aspiration to strengthen its naval forces in light of what he described as China's "illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive activities." As an archipelago nation, the Philippines recognizes the critical importance of maintaining a robust submarine capability to effectively defend its extensive waters and uphold its sovereignty.

Currently, the Philippines faces significant challenges in funding and readiness for these military modernization efforts. Despite these hurdles, the plan to acquire submarines symbolizes a strategic recognition by the government of the vital role of underwater deterrence. The International Development and Security Cooperation think tank, led by Chester Cabalza, has expressed support for this initiative, highlighting its potential impact on regional security dynamics.

The country's military modernization efforts are not solely focused on submarines. Last year, the Philippines acquired its first and only batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles through a US$375 million deal with India. These advanced missiles are intended to complement the planned submarine capability, further enhancing the nation's defense posture.

The drive to modernize the military is being fueled by an urgent need to counter China's growing presence in the South China Sea. The Philippine government aims to acquire capabilities that will enable it to defend its exclusive economic zone effectively and ensure its territorial integrity. As part of this strategic endeavor, the country is looking to procure additional BrahMos missiles.
