The Philippine Navy has announced a strategic shift in its maritime operations in the West Philippine Sea, as tensions with China over the contested waters continue to escalate. On Wednesday, Captain John Percie Alcos revealed the plan to deploy Surface Action Groups (SAGs) as a means to strengthen the navy's presence in the region. These groups will consist of several warships patrolling simultaneously, replacing the previous lone-ship or "lone wolf" operations.

The deployment of SAGs is intended to enhance the navy's ability to "cover more of our areas and jurisdiction," according to Captain Alcos. This move comes as a response to the aggressive actions by China, which have included the use of water cannons, high-intensity lasers, and unauthorized patrols within Manila's exclusive economic zone. The Philippine government views these actions as a direct threat to its sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.

Despite the strategic intent behind the deployment of SAGs, experts caution that this approach may place a strain on the Philippine Navy's resources. Operating multiple warships at once could potentially reduce overall coverage capabilities and expose individual ships to targeted assaults. The navy must weigh these risks against the benefits of increased presence and deterrence in the disputed waters.

The West Philippine Sea falls within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, yet China's assertive actions have frequently challenged this claim.
