Mauricio Pochettino is currently in charge of the United States national soccer team. He will now have the difficult task of preparing his young squad for the 2026 World Cup. Pochettino coached Chelsea through the Premier League slate of the 2023-24 season before resigning in early May. As of now, he’s once again returned to the poles. Now, he is tasked with leading the United States to success in a tournament that will be co-hosted by Canada and Mexico.
The United States just suffered their hardest challenge thus far, falling 2-1 to rivals Canada in the Concacaf Nations League third place match. This loss has raised concerns about what’s happening with this team. Pochettino reacted to this with the famous Hollywood quote, “Houston, we have a problem.” He underscored the need for that improvement to be made urgently with the World Cup fast approaching. As he approaches the challenge with buoyant hope, he thinks there’s still time to address these shortcomings before the tournament kicks off.
"It's better (to lose) now because I think we have time. Because if we will be in this situation in one year time, for sure. I will tell you, 'Houston, we have a problem. SOS," said Mauricio Pochettino.
Building a Winning Team
Pochettino has acknowledged that he has significant work to do to mold the United States team into a competitive force on the world stage. The recent losses to both Panama in the Concacaf Nations League semi-finals and Canada have highlighted areas that require attention. Through all these problems, Pochettino’s faith in his players has never wavered.
"Don't be pessimistic, and don't get bad feelings. We are all (disappointed) and the fans need to feel the disappointment that we didn't win. But I'm not going to allow (us) to feel pessimistic because I think we have good players," he stated.
The challenge lies in harnessing the potential of the current roster and addressing any shortcomings through strategic planning and rigorous training.
Upcoming Matches as Preparation
Fortunately for the U.S., there will be another opportunity to rally in June. They will face their first real test of progress in friendly matches against Turkey and Switzerland. These matches will be important training ground for Pochettino’s side. They seek to address tactical deficiencies and reinforce unity and togetherness both on and off the field.
Pochettino is determined to use these matches to assess his players' capabilities and make any necessary adjustments in tactics and strategy. The welcoming fixtures will provide plenty of opportunity for you to experiment and refine. He’ll be looking to use this as another chance to hone his winning formula ahead of the World Cup.
Looking Ahead to 2026
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Pochettino wants to make sure his team is ready when that moment arrives. He understands that spirit and grit will take him places. As co-hosting the tournament provides the United States a truly special opportunity, we… With such privilege comes the burden of having to do better while playing on home turf.
