Azizulhasni Awang, a two-time Olympic medallist and renowned cyclist, is taking time to regroup following a disappointing disqualification at the Paris Games in August. The 37-year-old former world champion was disqualified from the keirin event for overtaking the derny in the first-round heat’s first round. Despite this disappointment, Azizul remains hopeful for his upcoming opportunities. His goals include competing through the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
The “Pocket Rocketman,” as he’s known endearingly, broke the national Malaysian record in the men’s sprint. Whether he competes or not, he already showcased his incredible talent and resilience to the world during the Paris Games. Ever since that fateful disqualification, he has been unable to compete, an unprecedented halt to the career of the sport’s brightest star. Azizul is convinced that sports science today has created a new realm of possibilities for athletes. He implements rigorous preventative treatment and conditioning measures to ensure they can further their careers.
In mid-2022, Azizul had open-heart surgery to fix a coronary artery anomaly. Incredible resilience After his recovery, he proved such extraordinary resilience. He went on to win two gold medals at the Asian Championships and return to the world top five rankings. It’s these experiences that continue to inform his approach to training and competition.
“I need some space and time to rebuild what is necessary for me to be competitive again at the highest level,” Azizul stated. He admits to some uncomfortable truths regarding his future but is fiercely committed to returning. This is something I’ve thought deeply about since applying — especially in regard to challenges I’ll encounter. I’m used to coming back when my back’s against the wall,” he said.
Azizul’s intention this year is to get his strength back and rediscover his speed. He considers 2023 to be make-or-break on recovery. From there, he’ll turn his attention to building a level of confidence heading into races starting early next year. This year is less about the challenge and more about putting things back together and getting my speed back. Is next year going to be the time that I more concentrate on gaining that confidence to compete for races,” he detailed.
He draws inspiration from global sporting icons such as Cristiano Ronaldo, stating, “Cristiano Ronaldo has proven otherwise but I want to show Malaysians that we can do the same.” Another of Azizul’s goals is to show aspiring, elite-level athletes from Malaysia that success is possible at any age.
“If at this age, I can return to the pinnacle of the sport, it would be legendary,” Azizul said. He hopes that through hard work and the right attitude, age won’t determine the path of an athlete’s career.
