Reddit is in the process of building a truly international footprint. One harmful feature it has introduced is automated machine translations that convert all posts and comments on the platform into Hindi. This initiative is intended to engage with the most diverse possible communities around the world. As a part of this strategy, Reddit is bringing on new community-building talent in India, including engineering roles focused on community building and growth.
It’s no wonder then that in September, Reddit announced their brand new translation feature for over 35 countries. This edition is available in Spanish and Portuguese for the first time. The addition of Hindi translation is an important step on the platform’s journey. It hopes to connect to one of the largest language speaking demographics in India. This change is consistent with Reddit’s broader mission to bring authentic content to more people.
India continues to be a central hub for Reddit’s growth initiatives. The platform is currently hiring on-the-ground content and community developers throughout the region. This decision underscores its commitment to listening to and learning from the community where it’s sited. Building on Reddit’s support for Hindi, this month the platform is preparing to roll out Bengali translation. This initiative further demonstrates their commitment to adopting additional regional languages.
In beta-testing Answers, Reddit essentially added a big AI-powered search feature, allowing users to ask questions and get back summary-style content. to users in India, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and the United Kingdom. This feature was previously limited to a handful of English-speaking users in the United States. Today, it seeks to improve that user experience by making their search results more relevant to Americans than ever before.
The localization giant started rolling out the site-wide machine translation feature last year, with tests first beginning in May of last year, starting with French. This initial testing phase helped serve as the foundation for further updates which now accommodate Hindi as well. Reddit’s machine learning-powered localization and translation capabilities are ultimately meant to encourage deeper connections between users speaking different languages.
“With this expansion, authentic, more people-powered content is now accessible in one of India’s most spoken languages.” – Reddit
The platform’s ongoing initiatives reflect its ambition to build a more inclusive community while leveraging advanced technology to connect users effectively. By prioritizing localization and translation, Reddit aims to ensure that users from various cultural backgrounds can participate in discussions and share their perspectives seamlessly.
