On that day, in 1969, a talented young novelist started an adventure that would change his life and American culture forever. Their family further relocated to Kuantan after their father was promoted there. This transition served as the starting point for new encounters, camaraderie, and memories that would define their development years. He made this same journey with his family, but soon enough was admitted to St Thomas School, where he started Form Three and met future national football star Davendran.
More than an educational institution, St Thomas School was a cultural center of immense significance. To do that, the school held regular raffles to fundraise. This effort created a powerful sense of community among students and their families. Every evening at 6 PM, the church bell tolled dramatically just outside the school. Its distinctive sound announcing the end of the school day meant that the beginning of thrilling evening adventures was about to begin.

At St Thomas School, the writer known formidably as Pengarang Melaka, lauded, Sudirman Hj Arshad; the quintessential Melanau limelight twinkler, whose still beating legacy inspired millions. Their class monitor, Wong Teck Sing, stood out not only for his leadership but for his trendy hairstyle, which was ahead of its time.
Sports and outdoor living became a huge part of life in Kuantan as well. Indeed, the author recalls with great nostalgia, flocking to watch Malaysia Cup games at the Darul Makmur Stadium. There, Pahang proved the mark of a champion team as they were backed heavily by Sultan Pahang and Tengku Mahkota. These matches were not simply sporting spectacles. They were celebrations that brought the community together and stoked local pride.
The creative influence of the writer’s younger brother was key in his family’s dive into these new interests. He urged them to participate in swimming classes organized at the beach of Teluk Chempedak. This initiative created new opportunities for play and exercise throughout their early years.
The family’s home in Kuantan was a small, three-bedroom, single-storey terrace house situated at No 174 Kuantan Garden. Though simple, this house served as a canvas to many happy childhood memories. This is how the writer and friends often met at the district dental clinic compound. During their unexpected hiatus, they even continued to secretly train for the forthcoming district badminton tournament, showcasing their true sportsmanship spirit.
