Remembering the Stars of 2023: A Tribute to Lives and Legacies Lost

The arts and entertainment community has lost a number of legendary figures in 2023. The year was marked by the deaths of legendary performers and activist intellectuals. Each of them, in ways big and small, have left indelible marks on their fields of work. Other big names such as Benjamin Zephaniah, Richard Roundtree, and Lance Reddick passed away, leaving long lasting legacies. Their artistic lives, along with those of David McCallum, Matthew Perry, Jerry Springer, Raquel Welch and William Friedkin are not forgotten.

Born in Birmingham, writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah was famous for his socially-conscious poetry, reggae music and acting roles. He unfortunately succumbed at the age of 65 years. Zephaniah’s poetry was frequently political, confronting injustices head-on, and always powerful and engaging. His powerful and idiosyncratic voice and perspective were instrumental in shaping contemporary literature, the arts and activism.

Richard Roundtree, the man who became the first Black action movie hero, passed away on October 24 at 81 years old. Roundtree’s ascendance to fame came on the heels of blaxploitation films, like Shaft, in the early 1970s. His work on the Shaft films made him an icon of Black cinema. His performance became a cultural touchstone for Black actors’ inclusion in genre works moving forward.

Actor Lance Reddick, known for his roles in major television series such as ‘The Wire’, ‘Fringe’, and ‘Bosch’, graced the big screen in the John Wick franchise. Reddick had passed away from natural causes at the age of 60. His talent and charisma endeared him to fans and colleagues alike, marking him as a notable figure in both television and film.

David McCallum, beloved for his role as Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS, has died at 90. At the time of his passing, he was 90 years young. It’s no coincidence that McCallum’s character resonated with audiences, becoming a favorite of viewers and a big part of the long-term success of the series. His body of work over several decades is a testament to a diverse range of roles he made his own.

Emmy-nominated actor Matthew Perry died recently at the age of 54. He was perhaps most famous for his indelible performance as the lovable Chandler Bing on the legendary sitcom Friends. Perry’s comedic genius and authenticity with audiences can never be understated. These qualities sure contributed to his iconic cultural status. Today, his work Friends lives on thanks to his vision and creative genius.

Jerry Springer, known for hosting “The Jerry Springer Show” from 1991 to 2018, passed away at 79 years of age. Springer’s show was controversial for its inflammatory and sensationalistic subjects, but it drew millions of viewers at the height of its popularity. He often addressed complex social issues in a way that resonated with “non-traditional voters,” people “who believe most politics are bull,” reflecting his belief in engaging diverse perspectives.

Raquel Welch, the international sex symbol of the 1960s and ’70s, died today at 82. Welch’s striking beauty and remarkable talent made Welch an international sensation. She starred in numerous films and television shows, leaving a lasting impact on popular culture.

William Friedkin, an Oscar-winning director celebrated for his groundbreaking work including the 1973 film The Exorcist, died at the age of 87. Friedkin’s impact on cinema was deep and vast, inspiring generations of filmmakers and creating the template for the horror genre we know today. The beauty of storytelling produced through the craft was demonstrated at its highest points within his films which frequently explored difficult issues.
