As Russia increased its aggression against Ukraine. In the first six hours of last night, it was able to carry out a large-scale attack of 350 drones and nine missiles. This comprehensive attack spanned many origins, inflicting tremendous damage and resulting in sad loss of life. This brutality has deepened the hatred already exacerbating this everlasting war.
The day’s strikes set off at least 27 fires in 13 Ukrainian provinces. They razed more than 80 houses of parents, displacing families and causing irreparable trauma. Sadly, the most recent wave of attacks killed twelve people, including three children, especially in the Zhytomyr region. Over 70 others were injured due to the shelling.
Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept the vast majority of the drones and missiles. Their implementation showcases a deep desire to protect civilians and infrastructure. Regardless, the continuous, overwhelming scale of the assault reminds us all of the underwater, uphill battle Ukraine fights against such brutal, nonstop aggression.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on the world to increase the pressure on Russia. He noted that Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine shows a clearly willful violation of international standards, norms, and a sense of complete impunity. The reason is simple — only a total absence of consequences allows Russia to carry out these strikes. What’s more, this impunity encourages their capacity to undermine the situation even further. There’s not true military sense to this, but there is profound political significance to it.
Against this backdrop, Zelenskyy confidently proclaimed that Russia could only be stopped with weapons. Like any criminal, the only way to bind Russia, like any criminal, is through power. To make history, we have to count on our collective power. The United States, Europe, and all countries that love life should unite to halt these attacks and reach a real peace.
The international community has responded with great confusion. U.S. President Donald Trump called Putin “CRAZY,” although he then chose to refrain from bringing any new sanctions against Russia. His administration’s current position casts doubt on how much these diplomatic overtures will do to stop Russian aggression.
Even as tensions heighten between all parties, Ukraine is firm in its commitment to protect against such strikes. The nation’s leaders have been appealing for coordinated action from the world’s powers to meet and deter Russian aggression. With every new act of violence, the cost to Ukraine and the rest of the world gets higher. This double-crisis highlights the dire need for a unified, international response to redress this breakdown of order and security in the region.
