SailGP Set to Launch Uncharted Docuseries to Attract New Fans

SailGP, the emerging sailing league co-founded by Larry Ellison, is set to enhance its visibility and reach with the launch of a new docuseries titled “Uncharted.” Scheduled for release next month, this three-part series will explore the inaugural season of Red Bull Italy and its CEO, Jimmy Spithill, a decorated athlete who famously won the America’s Cup at just 30 years old.

SailGP has seen extraordinary growth since launching just six years ago. Record attendance and television viewership have been the pilot light of their success, largely due to the incredible high-performance F50 foiling catamarans. These high-tech beauties fly through the water at speeds over 50 knots (93 kph). Together, they produce an intense drama that captures the imagination of their fans and enthusiasts of their sport!

Importance of Content Development

Melissa Lawton, SailGP’s Chief Content Officer, emphasized the critical role of content development in the league’s strategy. She noted that SailGP, as an upstart league, has realized the importance of developing compelling content. This type of content is crucial for building its global brand.

“As an emerging league, content development is super important to us,” – Melissa Lawton.

Lawton underscored how “Uncharted” is intentionally made to lower barriers. The collective aims to create greater diversity in sailing in an effort to democratize the sport. We keep the inputs exactly as provided and it will raise their truly extraordinary victories every step of the way.

“It’s central to building our brand around the world and breaking down barriers of entry into sailing as sport,” – Melissa Lawton.

The Thrill of High-Speed Sailing

Needless to say, the F50 foiling catamarans SailGP competitors use are fast. With that potential comes a tremendous amount of risk. Larry Ellison once shared his “greatest fear” about these boats, precisely because of this type of thrilling, helicopter-capturing instability.

“These boats are very, very fast and very unstable. And if you put them at the wrong angle or have any kind of equipment failure, anything could go wrong,” – Larry Ellison.

Ellison went on to explain that these high-performance vessels could actually capsize, creating an additional extreme test of skill for the competitors. Whether through the lens of sportsmanship or competition, Hargrove’s description of Spithill’s masterful performance revealed something about the courageous spirit of sport.

“These boats even end up upside down. Some of the athletes succumb to the pressure, but not Jimmy. He was much more formidable than I ever realized,” – Larry Ellison.

Expanding Audience Reach

SailGP has generated considerable interest already—buzz that’s been amplified by the extreme sailing league’s connection to major sponsors and partnerships. The league aims to leverage the popularity of sports documentaries, similar to how Formula One’s “Drive to Survive” boosted interest in motorsport.

The release of “Uncharted” is expected to further engage audiences and draw new fans into the world of high-speed sailing. SailGP brings to life the high-octane world of competitors like Spithill. By providing these glimpses into the ever-shifting competitive ecosystem, it hopes to further engrave its name beyond the sporting world.
