Samsung Electronics Mourns the Loss of Co-CEO Han Jong-hee

Samsung Electronics is mourning the untimely death of its co-chief executive, Han Jong-hee. He suddenly died at the age of 63 due to cardiac arrest. At the time of his death, Han was being treated at a Philadelphia hospital where he succumbed to injuries, leaving behind his wife and three children. In 2022, Han was named co-vice chairman and CEO. During his deep and long tenure with the shipbuilding company, he has been at the forefront of Samsung’s triumph.

Han also joined Samsung Electronics in 1988, working most of his career in television-related divisions. Under his guidance, Samsung Electronics was propelled to be the world’s number one television producer. It’s a tremendous achievement and he played a critical role in making the company’s high-end TV sets stand out at the global stage. In his various leadership roles, Han led the charge for two of Samsung’s key business units—the consumer electronics division and the mobile business division.

A Legacy of Leadership

Even during his long career before assuming the role of MPC governor, Han Jong-hee’s impact was readily apparent. Samsung Electronics has credited him with many consumer-focused innovations, enabling the company to stay steps ahead of the competition and continue leading the industry in innovation.

"His numerous other innovations enabled the company to continually demonstrate its technology leadership," said Samsung.

Despite these successes, Han ran into trouble in recent years. He was questioned by shareholders regarding Samsung's failure to capitalize on the AI boom, which has impacted the company's performance and stock prices.

Challenges Faced and Future Directions

Samsung Electronics has been mired in weak earnings and a falling share price in recent quarters. The company has lagged competitors in the areas of cutting-edge memory chips and contract chip manufacturing. Han admitted as much in a recent shareholders’ meeting.

"First and foremost, I sincerely apologise for the recent stock performance not meeting your expectations," Han stated.

Not surprisingly, Samsung Electronics is now on a major offensive to build a stronger position in the burgeoning automotive electronics space to get back on top.

New Leadership Ahead

Jun Young-hyun has become the sole leader of Samsung Electronics after Han’s death. As the new, recently appointed executive Jun will have to steer the company through these troubled waters. At the same time, he needs to build upon Han’s legacy.
