Sarah Michelle Gellar is reportedly in final negotiations to reprise her iconic role in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. The new series, set to air as a Hulu original, will introduce a fresh chapter in the "Buffyverse." While Gellar will not be the leading character, she is expected to appear as a recurring character and serve as an executive producer. The reboot seeks to captivate a new generation with its anticipated storyline centered around a new Slayer.
The original showrunner, Joss Whedon, will not participate in the reboot due to misconduct allegations. Instead, Nora and Lila Zuckerman will write the series and take on roles as showrunners and executive producers. 20th Television and Searchlight TV describe the revival as "the next chapter in the Buffyverse," aiming to build on the legacy of the original series that aired from 1997 to 2003.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, now 47, has expressed that the original series concluded without any unfinished business. She previously commented on the character Buffy Summers, saying:
"I like to think she's living a good life, a peaceful life, without having to do all the slayings she used to." – Sarah Michelle Gellar
Gellar also humorously noted the passage of time since the series ended:
"It's been 20 years so I'd need a lot of plastic surgery!" – Sarah Michelle Gellar
The reboot will present Buffy Summers in a mentorship role to the new Slayer, allowing Gellar to revisit her beloved character without overshadowing the new narrative. Alongside Gellar, Gail Berman and Dolly Parton are also slated to executive produce the show, ensuring a blend of seasoned expertise and fresh perspectives.
The series remains untitled and is still in development. As fans anticipate its release, Gellar balances her career with her family life. She shares two children, Charlotte and Rocky, with her husband Freddie Prinze Jr., underscoring her ability to manage both personal and professional commitments.
