Seaweed Harvesting: A Tradition Meets Modern Innovation in Tamil Nadu

In the coastal waters off Rameswaram in India's Tamil Nadu state, women like Lakshmi Muthu are carrying forward a long-standing tradition of seaweed collection, now infused with modern techniques. At 54, Muthu is part of a community of women who have been gathering seaweed for generations. They once collected as much as 30 kilograms a day from the shallow, greenish waters near Pamban Island, situated between India and Sri Lanka. Today, their work continues with added support from the Tamil Nadu state government, which promotes seaweed cultivation on bamboo rafts.

Sporting a shirt over her saree for protection, Muthu dons plastic goggles to shield her eyes and wraps cloth around her hands to avoid scratches from the coral. The women wade through the shallow ocean water, gathering clumps of seaweed, a practice that has sustained livelihoods in this region for years. The seaweed, greenish in hue, is an essential resource for these communities.

The introduction of bamboo rafts marks a significant shift in this traditional industry. Supported by the Tamil Nadu state government, these rafts provide a sustainable method for cultivating seaweed.
