A Singaporean couple has decided not to pursue legal action against three Indonesian teenagers following an incident of harassment during their visit to Bandung, West Java, on December 31. The couple, who recorded the incident, accepted a public apology from the perpetrators, leading to the cessation of police investigations.
The incident took place on a public street in Bandung, where the couple was approached and trailed by three individuals. The situation was captured on video, which showed the teenagers harassing the couple as they walked. Following the event, the couple reported the incident to the local police, leading to the arrest of the teenagers involved.
Bandung City Police Chief Budi Sartono spearheaded the investigation. He confirmed that after reviewing the case and considering the apology made by the teenagers on social media, the victim chose not to proceed with legal actions. The decision was influenced by the fact that the perpetrators are minors, and the apology was seen as a sufficient lesson for them.
“The victim has confirmed that she will not continue the legal process into the case as she saw the perpetrators had apologised on social media and thought this would serve as a lesson as the perpetrators are children,” said Budi Sartono.
The police initially took action against the teenagers to ensure justice and accountability. However, following the public apology and the couple's decision to drop charges, the investigation was halted. This outcome highlights a resolution through mutual understanding and acceptance of responsibility by the young offenders.
The incident underscores the importance of addressing harassment seriously while also offering opportunities for restorative measures, especially involving juveniles. The approach taken by both the victims and law enforcement reflects a balanced consideration between justice and social rehabilitation.
