Perplexity has unveiled its latest innovation, the Sonar API, which promises to revolutionize the AI search market with unparalleled affordability and versatility. At a competitive rate of $5 per 1,000 searches, Sonar API positions itself as the most budget-friendly option available. Additional charges apply, including $1 for every 750,000 words input into the AI model, and another $1 for each 750,000 words generated by the model. This approach offers enterprises and developers the opportunity to seamlessly integrate Perplexity’s advanced generative AI search tools into their applications, expanding their capabilities and reach.
The new Sonar API is offered in two tiers— a base version and a more sophisticated option, Sonar Pro. The base version focuses on cost-efficiency and speed, utilizing a lightweight model to deliver quick results. On the other hand, Sonar Pro caters to users requiring detailed responses to complex queries. It provides twice as many citations as the base version, though it comes at a higher cost. Sonar Pro maintains a $5 per 1,000 searches fee but includes additional charges of $5 for 750,000 input words and $15 for 750,000 output words.
Sonar's practical applications have already caught the attention of major industry players. Zoom is incorporating the Sonar API to power an AI assistant within its video conferencing platform, showcasing the potential of this technology in enhancing user experience. Perplexity’s recent success in raising $73.6 million in a funding round has valued the company at approximately $520 million, reflecting investor confidence in its innovative offerings. The company's annual recurring revenue currently stands between $5 million and $10 million, indicating robust growth and adoption.
