South Korean Actress Lee Joo-shil Passes Away at 81

Renowned South Korean actress Lee Joo-shil has passed away at the age of 81. She died last Monday, January 27, at her family home in Uijeongbu, South Korea, after a battle with stomach cancer. Her agency, 1230culture, confirmed her death, marking the end of a prolific career that spanned over five decades.

Lee Joo-shil began her illustrious career as a stage actress in 1965. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, she became a celebrated figure in South Korean theatre. Her talent and passion for acting led her to transition to the screen, where she appeared in numerous films and television dramas. One of her early notable roles was in the 1980 film "Country Diary," which cemented her status as a versatile actress.

Her career continued to flourish as she took on a diverse range of roles, including an appearance in the 2016 zombie thriller "Train to Busan." More recently, she portrayed Park Mal-soon, the mother of Hwang Jun-ho, in the second season of the globally acclaimed series "Squid Game." The second season was released just over a month ago on December 26, following the original release on Netflix on September 17, 2021.

In addition to her acting career, Lee Joo-shil demonstrated remarkable resilience in her personal life. She was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 1993 and bravely fought the disease for more than a decade. During her treatment, she pursued academic achievements, completing a college degree and later earning a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University in 2010.

In response to her passing, fans have taken to social media to express their condolences and admiration for the late actress.
