Spotify Pilots Educational Audio Courses in the U.K., Eyes U.S. Expansion

Spotify
is broadening its digital horizons by introducing educational courses to its streaming platform, adding to its extensive offerings of music, podcasts, and audiobooks. This new feature is currently being piloted in the United Kingdom, marking a significant step for the company as it seeks to diversify content and revenue streams. The initiative follows Spotify’s strategic move to undercut market leader Audible with a competitive $10 per month standalone audiobooks subscription.

The educational courses feature allows users to filter their Spotify Library to show only "Podcasts & Courses," making it easier to navigate and engage with content. Users can explore a variety of topics, ranging from business and tech to lifestyle and music. Some recommended courses include "Self-Care Through Creativity" with Sara Beth Morgan and "Delicious Vegetarian Cooking" with Marco Pierre White. These offerings promise to cater to a wide audience, particularly those interested in technical subjects like AI, web3, and the metaverse.

Tech enthusiast Chris Messina recently discovered the development of these courses in the U.S., indicating Spotify's plans for potential expansion. Although Spotify has not confirmed when these courses will be available stateside, Messina noted that users might eventually access the section through search, despite the current empty category pages suggesting the feature is still under development.

Spotify's educational venture represents its ongoing strategy to generate more revenue by charging users for select streaming programs. In addition to free content, the company is offering ads in audio and video podcasts and paid "top up" hours for audiobooks. This diverse monetization approach aims to increase Spotify's revenue by leveraging different audio formats.
