Taiwan Delegation Navigates Diplomatic Waters at US Inauguration

A Taiwanese delegation, led by President Lai Ching-te, is attending the US presidential inauguration, marking a significant moment in Taiwan-US relations. Accompanied by a cross-party group of seven lawmakers, Vice President Han Kuo-yu leads Taiwan's representation, while China sends Vice President Han Zheng. This event occurs amidst complex diplomatic tensions, as the United States does not maintain formal ties with Taiwan but supports it through arms sales and defense commitments.

The Taiwanese delegation's visit underscores the island's strong relationship with the United States. President Lai Ching-te emphasized the importance of democratic alliances during discussions with former US Vice President Mike Pence, citing concerns over China's military pressure and its alliances with nations like Russia. Lai's stance reflects Taiwan's strategic approach to maintaining international support against China's sovereignty claims.

Vice President Han Kuo-yu, whose party traditionally prefers engagement with China, denies any pro-Beijing leanings and firmly rejects China's sovereignty claims over Taiwan. Despite Han's offers for dialogue, China has rebuffed these overtures and increased military activities around Taiwan over the past five years. The Chinese government continues to refuse communication with President Lai, labeling him a "separatist."
