Taiwanese Actor Darren Wang Faces Investigation Over Military Service Evasion

Taiwanese actor Darren Wang is currently under investigation by Taiwanese authorities for allegedly evading mandatory military service. The 33-year-old actor, known for his breakout role in the 2015 hit movie "Our Times," was approached by law enforcement officials at his residence in Taipei on a Tuesday morning, February 18. The operation, initiated by the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office, involved a search of his property and the seizure of pertinent documents.

Wang, who gained further recognition with a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Macau International Movie Festival in 2019 for his performance in "The Last Wish," is among eight suspects under scrutiny for similar allegations. The investigation extends beyond military service evasion to encompass accusations of document forgery. Authorities have detained three individuals believed to have been involved in falsifying the medical histories of the suspects, potentially aiding them in avoiding their military duties.

The operation at Wang's home commenced at 8 a.m. and lasted over an hour, during which investigators collected documents deemed relevant to the case. Following the initial inquiry, Wang was taken in for further questioning, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating these allegations.

Military service is a significant obligation in Taiwan, where all eligible male citizens are required to serve. Evasion of this duty is regarded as a serious offense, reflecting broader societal expectations and legal responsibilities. The investigation into Wang and others highlights the ongoing efforts of Taiwanese authorities to uphold these obligations and enforce the law.
