In a landmark agreement, Tanzania and Burundi have partnered with China to launch a significant railway project worth $2.15 billion. The project, involving two renowned Chinese firms, aims to construct a 282-kilometer railway line connecting Burundi to the port city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. This venture, which was formalized during a ceremony on Wednesday, promises to enhance the transportation of metals, including the battery mineral nickel, facilitating their export.
The railway will be built by the China Railway Engineering Group and the China Railway Engineering Design and Consulting Group. These companies bring their expertise and experience to this ambitious project, which is expected to significantly impact the region's infrastructure and economic landscape. The agreement was officially signed by Tanzania's transport minister, Makame Mbarawa, solidifying the collaborative effort between Tanzania and Burundi.
