Tapestry, an innovative app designed to organize feeds from across the open web, has officially launched, marking a significant milestone in social media aggregation. Initially introduced as a Kickstarter project in January 2024, Tapestry successfully raised over $177,000 through crowdfunding efforts. The app supports a diverse range of sources, including RSS feeds, YouTube, podcasts, Bluesky, Mastodon, Reddit, Tumblr, Micro.blog, GO Comics, and more, offering users the ability to curate their own personalized feeds.
The Iconfactory, renowned for its work on Twitterific, developed Tapestry. In a strategic move, Tumblr has financially backed the app with a six-figure grant. This investment not only aids Tapestry's mission to support the open social web but also integrates Tumblr into the fediverse—a decentralized social network powered by ActivityPub. This backing underscores Tumblr's commitment to fostering a more open and interconnected digital landscape.
Tapestry stands out by allowing users to create customized feeds from a variety of sources rather than relying on a single social network. The app is built on open protocols, exemplifying a modern approach to social media that prioritizes user choice and customization. The recent App Store debut of Tapestry marks its official entry into the market, further expanding its reach.
Moreover, Tapestry has introduced a sponsorship program that enables advertisers to engage with its user base. This initiative opens new avenues for marketing products and services to a targeted audience. The app's versatility extends to its iPad version, which can run on Macs, providing users with flexible access across devices.
In terms of technical operations, while Tapestry's back end is unspecified, it is noteworthy that Tumblr is transitioning its back end to WordPress. This move aims to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.
"Our hope is that the community around Tapestry will want to know about exciting indie apps, blogs that are fueled by enthusiasm, and podcasts or YouTube channels that inform and entertain,"
