Tay Ping Hui, a 54-year-old local actor, continues to make strides in his career while holding steadfast to his Singaporean identity. After leaving Mediacorp in 2018 following a 19-year tenure, Tay ventured into the Chinese entertainment industry by signing with Perfect World Pictures, later known as GHY Culture & Media. However, he transitioned into freelancing last year, seeking new challenges and experiences.
Tay has starred in several Chinese dramas, including "Handsome Siblings," "Heroes," "Brave Heart 2," and "Sisterhood." Despite his international endeavors, he emphasizes his connection to Singapore. Tay acknowledges that being a top star in Singapore may not carry the same weight internationally but remains proud of his roots.
"When you're playing in the big leagues, you'll realise that being the top star in Singapore doesn't mean much. You're still just a small part of it all." – Tay Ping Hui
In his journey, Tay is accompanied by his long-time assistant, Tina Chua, who has been by his side for over a decade. Their professional relationship has evolved into a familial bond, as Tay affectionately states:
"You've indirectly become a part of my family. If I knew someone was bullying you, I would make sure they regret it. I won't hold back because I feel that protecting you has become one of my responsibilities." – Tay Ping Hui
The duo's adventures are showcased in an episode of "Camping Around The World" where they explore Bhutan's natural wonders. They hike and camp at Bumdra, try their hand at archery, hang prayer flags, and marvel at the Tiger's Nest Monastery. This episode airs on Channel 8 every Monday at 8 p.m.
Tay's decision to become a freelancer reflects his desire for creative freedom and personal growth. He expresses contentment in choosing projects that resonate with him personally:
"I'm at the stage where I can take on the things I want to do, rather than the things I have to do. If I don't want to do something, I won't. If I want to do it, then I'll take it on. This freedom feels truly incredible." – Tay Ping Hui
This newfound freedom allows Tay to pursue projects that challenge him and expand his horizons beyond financial incentives.
"It's no longer about making money. I want to keep pushing myself and challenging myself. I also want to travel to different places and broaden my horizons." – Tay Ping Hui
Despite his international pursuits, Tay remains loyal to his homeland. Each filming venture concludes with a return to Singapore, underscoring his deep connection to the country and its people.
"Because that's where my family is. This is my country." – Tay Ping Hui
