By the end of 2023, nearly every major automaker had committed to adopting Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS), marking a significant shift in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. This widespread adoption aims to streamline EV charging and enhance accessibility for consumers. The move will integrate Tesla's Supercharger network with various other automotive brands, providing a unified charging experience for EV owners across North America.
Tesla has extended a hand to Rivian vehicle owners by promising to supply a free adapter by January 2025. This initiative ensures that Rivian customers can seamlessly access Tesla's extensive charging infrastructure, easing the transition for those awaiting compatible adapters. As Tesla's NACS continues to gain traction, Volvo has announced that buyers of its 2025 EX90, EX40, or EC40 models will receive a complimentary NACS adapter. However, existing Volvo EV owners will need to purchase an adapter for $230.
Ford has embraced the change by allowing its EV owners to order adapters through the Ford Pass app. This integration provides Ford customers with a smooth transition to utilizing Tesla's Supercharger network. Meanwhile, Lucid Motors has set plans for its Gravity SUV owners to access Tesla's charging facilities by January 31, 2025. The upcoming Lucid Gravity models will feature a standard NACS charge port, facilitating easier charging access.
Rivian has also made strides in integrating with Tesla's network. As of September 2024, customers who place orders for new Rivian vehicles will automatically receive an adapter upon delivery, ensuring immediate access to Tesla's Superchargers. Similarly, Lucid Air sedan owners will be granted access to Tesla's charging network through adapters starting in the second quarter of the year.
General Motors (GM) has been proactive in adapting its software for Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC EVs, enabling them to connect with Tesla's Superchargers as of September 2024. From 2025 onwards, GM plans to equip its EVs with the NACS charge port as a standard feature, highlighting the company's commitment to seamless integration.
Kia has revealed its strategy to ship adapters beginning in mid-November 2024, with existing EV customers needing to purchase adapters from dealers at a future date. The company plans to offer NACS charger access starting January 15, 2025. Furthermore, Kia announced that customers buying new 2024 EV6 or 2025 EV9 SUV models from September 4, 2024, will receive a free adapter with their purchase.
Nissan is also on board with plans to offer Ariya drivers access to the Tesla network via a NACS adapter starting in late 2024. This move signifies Nissan's commitment to enhancing the charging experience for its customers.
Mercedes-Benz has announced that its EVs will gain access to the Tesla network beginning in February 2025. Existing Mercedes-Benz EV owners can purchase a Lectron-made adapter for $185 through authorized dealerships, ensuring compatibility with the expanding Supercharger network.
Hyundai has pledged to send free NACS adapters to customers who bought or leased an EV before January 31. In addition, Hyundai plans to introduce EVs equipped with a NACS port for the U.S. and Canadian markets in 2025. The recent LA Auto Show featured the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the Genesis Electrified GV70 models with NACS plugs, promising drivers seamless access to Tesla's Supercharger network.
