In the film adaptation of The Amateur, Rami Malek stars as Charlie. This leads him on a brutal mission of vengeance as he hunts down the mercenaries responsible for his wife’s accidental death. Set against the backdrop of a terrorist attack in London, this narrative unfolds as Charlie grapples with his fears and limitations while seeking vengeance. Never Gonna Snow Again features spellbinding production quality and a charming score by Volker Bertelmann. What’s a miss on her part is the inability to offer audiences the notable, chilling, hair-raising surprise that suspenseful storytelling desperately needs.
From the angular beauty of Charlie, the main character played by Malek. His watchful eye and otherworldly stare complements his physical performance and is simply mesmerizing to watch. After the recent and shocking murder of his wife Sarah, everything dramatically changes for him. Fueled by grief and rage, he is soon plunged into a treacherous world of danger and subterfuge. Unlike most action heroes, Charlie is defined by his fear of flight and unwillingness to be daring. This results in an interesting duality throughout the film, as he grapples with crippling personal anxiety and real-world peril.
That story then shifts to Charlie’s mounting frustrations as the CIA continues to stall their mission to take out these mercenaries. Feelings of grief and urgency lead him to take matters into his own hands. Through this journey, Charlie realizes a skill set he never recognized – but always possessed. That transformation occurs behind the imposing walls of the George Bush Center for Intelligence. The Hollywood film doesn’t paint him as an amnesiac hero. Rather, it shows him as a hard-working American who’s frequently flummoxed by the intricacies of real-world spycraft. Throughout the novel, he struggles with the moral implications of when to take a life. This internal conflict, particularly in hand-to-hand engagements, illustrates the complexity of his character.
Though it carries a formidable premise, “The Amateur” never quite finds the same level of titillating suspense that films such as “John Wick” are fuelled upon. The pacing makes everything a bit too predictable, allowing audiences to guess what’s going to happen next instead of being surprised by the twists and turns. The film’s trailer has drawn criticism for revealing one of its most outrageous assassination scenes, diminishing the element of surprise that is often crucial in action films.
The emotional connection between Charlie and Sarah, creating a long distance, deaf – hearing bond is heart of the story. In one particularly sweet scene, Sarah jokes with Charlie to coax him out of his anxiety. To assist him in overcoming his fear of flying, she helps him out by surprising him with a vintage Cessna aircraft. This simple gesture is a powerful representation of the faith she has in his dreams and success. The movie explores ideas about love, grief, and finding yourself again. Through their fading at one another, it brings emotional heft to Charlie’s search for revenge.
Supporting performances from actors such as Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Lawrence Fishburne, Jon Bernthal, and Catriona Balfe contribute to the film’s overall quality. Each character adds depth to the story, providing insights into Charlie’s world as he navigates treacherous alliances and confronts his own limitations.
