Rescue teams in Yashio city, northeast of Tokyo, have found an agonizing scene. They were able to recover the body of a 74-year-old truck driver who fell victim to being sucked into a sinkhole. The driver had been traversing the roadway typical for most corridors during the morning rush hour in late January. Little did they suspect, a calamity was ready to begin. The Yashio sinkhole, originally reported back in February, which was attributed to corroded sewerage pipes, has since grown to nearly ten times the original size.
The sinkhole was initiated at a depth of 16 m. Now, it has grown to at least 40 meters across, or roughly the length of an Olympic swimming pool. The sudden failure of that roadway led to an immediate and deadly collapse. Both the truck and its driver were consumed in the flames from the wreck.
