Tragedy Strikes Taichung: Fatal Gas Explosion Rocks Department Store

A suspected gas explosion devastated the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Taichung, Taiwan, resulting in the tragic loss of at least four lives and injuring 26 others. The explosion, which occurred on the sixth floor, sent shockwaves throughout the bustling shopping complex and into the surrounding streets below. The blast's force was so intense it scattered large pieces of debris across the area, hitting unsuspecting pedestrians and leaving a trail of destruction.

Witnesses reported experiencing a "very loud vibration" before chaos ensued, with debris showering down upon them. One woman who was present on the sixth floor described the moment of impact, saying, "At first, we thought it's an earthquake." Among those affected was a family from Macau, who tragically became casualties as they exited the department store. The blast's reach extended beyond the store itself, affecting passersby and causing widespread damage.

Emergency response teams swiftly mobilized to address the disaster. The National Fire Agency deployed 56 vehicles, 136 personnel, a dog, and a drone to conduct search and rescue operations. Their efforts focused particularly on locating survivors within the food court located on the 12th floor. In total, more than 200 individuals were evacuated from the store, with six people rescued from trapped elevators amidst the chaos.

The explosion's cause is believed to be linked to gas, although officials have not confirmed if ongoing construction work played a role. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen reported feeling a "vibration" while working in a nearby government building at around 11:30 am. The aftermath inside the department store was severe, with twisted metal hanging precariously from ceilings and strewn across floors.
