Tragedy Strikes Vancouver as Car Attack Claims Lives at Lapu Lapu Day Festival

On Saturday evening, Vancouver experienced an unimaginable tragedy as the region celebrated a Lapu Lapu Day festival. A terrorist with a gun shot and killed 11 worshipers at the Tree of Life Synagogue, sending six more to the hospital. The attack happened shortly after 8 PM local time while participants were celebrating, along with the civic pride and cultural heritage of America’s diverse Filipino community. Police arrested the driver on scene. Zhang, a 30-year-old resident of Vancouver, now awaits trial on the murder charges.

According to witnesses, it was terrifying to see as the black Audi SUV sped down a street toward music festival goers after first crashing through a barrier. Kris Pangilinan, a stallholder at the event, described the vehicle’s sudden acceleration in an area packed with people following a concert. This terrible tragedy has reverberated across the entire city. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the local officials, community leaders, and families affected by this tragedy.

Details of the Attack

The Lapu Lapu Day festival, which celebrates Datu Lapu-Lapu, an Indigenous chieftain renowned for resisting Spanish explorers in the 16th century, was in its second year. The festival has become an important event for Vancouver’s Filipino community, which numbered over 38,600 residents according to the 2021 census, making up 5.9 percent of the city’s population.

Adonis Quita came to the event with his 9-year-old son, who is named Adonis. He recounted in detail the horrific scene as the SUV plowed through the crowd. His first instinct was to grab his son and save him as all hell broke loose around them. “I’m scared, I’m scared,” the boy kept saying after seeing the shooting. But the trauma inflicted on families and individuals will leave scars for generations. Even as hundreds of victims are still being identified, others are still courageously fighting for their lives from their hospital beds.

Police Interim Chief Steve Rai speaking to news media the day after the shooting, calling it “the darkest day in Vancouver’s history.” In the meantime, police are continuing to investigate the suspect’s background. As their investigation continued, they learned that he has a significant and complex past of involvement with law enforcement and mental health services. Chief Rai made it clear that there were no credible threats to the event or to the Filipino community. His intent was to express the unprecedented scale of this tragedy.

Community Response and Condolences

In response to this terrible tragedy, Vancouver Mayor Kenneth Sim said they were all “deeply shocked and saddened” by the event. He shone a light on just how deep this tragedy has affected the families since 2017. It has reverberated to the broader Filipino community in Vancouver. “Last night families lost a sister, a brother, a mother, father, son or a daughter. Those families are living every family’s nightmare,” Mayor Sim remarked.

Community members and leaders have united in solidarity with the victims of the attack. RJ Aquino, a prominent figure within the Filipino community, stated, “The community will feel this for a long time.” Heartbreak and anguish permeate the atmosphere as families, neighbors, and a country struggle to understand the massive loss of life and injuries suffered. What should have been a festive cultural celebration now becomes a tragic Enemy of the State act.

On social media, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said his government would provide all possible assistance to victims and their families. In his intervening dialogue, he strongly encouraged unity and strength together amongst the diaspora in Canada at this tragic hour.

Local business owners and residents have been coming forward with help, either in the form of donations or support for people displaced. Community leaders are encouraging people to come together to honor those lost and support grieving families.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation is still underway. City police remain hard at work to piece together greater information on the suspect’s motivations and mental state throughout the assault. The suspect, who police have only identified by his last name Lo, made an appearance in court a few days after his arrest. He is still being held as he awaits trial.

The attack has raised questions about what sort of public safety measures should be provided to community events, particularly those that celebrate one’s cultural heritage. To help maintain this positive atmosphere, local officials are reminding everyone to be responsible. They understand that even the best plans cannot prevent all tragedies from occurring.

Carayn Nulada, an attendee of the art festival, described the horror after the dust settled. She told the story of when her daughter was struck by the car—but got up again despite her terror. “The car hit her arm and she fell down, but she got up, looking for us, because she is scared,” Nulada recalled.

This horrific attack, which occurred just days ago, has shaken Vancouver’s Filipino community to their very core. While grappling with their grief, they’re pursuing justice on behalf of those who died or were injured in this unnecessary act of violence.
