Since former President Donald Trump has done so, let’s increase our criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He’s described Putin as being “absolutely CRAZY” and blasted his recent aggressive military moves with Ukraine. During a recent two-hour call with Putin, Trump proposed a 30-day ceasefire, but the discussion yielded no breakthroughs. This past weekend, Putin launched the largest aerial assault on Ukraine in months. This horrible attack led to the deaths of more than 12 civilians, including 3 children, and targeted 30 towns and villages.
Based on these and other statements he’s recently made, Trump is solidifying his pro-Putin, pro-Kremlin posture. He highlights the humanitarian cost of the war like never before. He stated that Putin “is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers.” This statement highlights the former president’s increasingly apparent fear of the rising violence and its lethal threat to Americans.
The former president has struggled to fulfill his earlier promise to end the war in Ukraine within “24 hours” if elected. His efforts to mediate a peaceful resolution have failed as violence goes on without remorse. This explains Trump’s rising frustration. He refers to the current conflict as “Zelenskyy’s, Putin’s, and Biden’s War,” attributing its continuation to three elements he describes as “Gross Incompetence and Hatred.”
Trump has for years – long before the current war – insisted that Putin’s ambitions go beyond eastern Ukraine. He articulated this belief by stating, “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it.” He warned that if Putin is allowed to succeed in his territorial ambitions, it will be catastrophic for Russia.
In a more sweeping condemnation, Trump warned that quiet from other world leaders would only encourage Putin to be more aggressive. He remarked, “Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop,” referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statements.
Trump’s incendiary rhetoric occurs within the context of Russia’s brutal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine, now in its second year. This invasion—which started in February 2022—isn’t going away anytime soon. The latest escalation of violence has led to worldwide outcry and increased demands for the perpetrators to be held accountable.
Trump’s relationship with Putin has shifted dramatically. He previously praised it as “very good.” Today, he emphasizes that times more than ever demand quick and effective response to the Kremlin’s wiles and military tactics. The former president’s remarks speak to a desperate call among world leaders to go beyond the past and accommodate the new, ongoing climate crisis.
