On Saturday, former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to make a shocking announcement. He announced that he would be having discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday morning. This legislative initiative is a much needed step to stop the bloodbath that continues in Ukraine – aptly called by Trump as such. He plans to consult with other NATO heavyweights in the course of these discussions.
Trump’s efforts come as he seeks to broker a deal to bring an end to the war that has persisted for months. His optimism about the prospects of a deal still shines through. In an interview with Bret Baier on Fox News, he went out on a limb. Honestly, I think I’m the only one that’s going to be able to do that one,” he said. And I think we’ll do it quickly, as well.”
During his upcoming discussions, Trump plans not only to address the conflict but to engage Putin on trade matters. He expressed a commitment to pursuing peace negotiations, stating, “I’m tired of having other people go and meet and everything else.” He’s threatened before to slap even more sanctions on Russia. This demonstrates that he is willing to take a hard line if and when he has reason to believe that Putin is disingenuous in his outreach.
Over the past few months, Trump has faced increasing difficulties in his high-stakes bargaining chip for the war. He is still committed to moving forward a peaceful resolution. Just earlier this week, he supported an unconditional, 30-day ceasefire. European leaders, such as French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine President Zelenskyy have been cajoling Russia to agree to this plan. TERM LIMITS ARE A GOOD IDEA. Trump sharply painted the ugly picture of the horrible war—highly violent and one that “should have never happened.”
The president doubles down even when warned that his public friendship with Putin is naive and dangerous. This grim reality has sent shockwaves among European allies. He has previously stated that he would employ sanctions if necessary, asserting, “I will use that if I have to, I would rather not use that.”
As Trump heads into these consequential conversations, we wish him luck and hope for positive results. He stated his wish for a ceasefire among his discussions, strengthening his conviction that peace is always possible.
“HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE A PRODUCTIVE DAY, A CEASEFIRE WILL TAKE PLACE, AND THIS VERY VIOLENT WAR, A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED, WILL END.” – Donald Trump
