In a significant diplomatic move, newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has pledged an "ironclad commitment" to the Philippines, a longstanding military ally in Asia. This commitment, made under the Mutual Defence Treaty (MDT), reflects the U.S.'s enduring support for Manila amidst escalating tensions in the South China Sea. Analysts have welcomed Rubio's stance, which they see as a continuation of U.S. policy and an indication of "more robust support" for the Philippines. However, the promise hinges on U.S. President Donald Trump's foreign policy direction regarding China.
Rubio communicated this commitment during a phone conversation with Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo, emphasizing Washington's dedication to their alliance. The discussion highlighted the ongoing South China Sea dispute, where Rubio criticized Beijing's actions, stating that such behavior "undermines regional peace and stability and is inconsistent with international law." This dialogue marks one of Rubio's initial actions as a key figure in executing Trump's foreign policy strategies.

The commitment comes amid broader international discussions, as Rubio recently met with fellow foreign ministers from the Quad nations—Australia, India, and Japan. Interestingly, Rubio did not raise discussions about the trilateral security arrangement among the U.S., Japan, and the Philippines, a late-stage initiative of former U.S. President Joe Biden. Analysts perceive Rubio's declaration as a strategic response to China's assertiveness in the South China Sea, reinforcing the U.S.'s role in regional security dynamics.
