Union Saint Gilloise stands on the brink of ending a 90-year championship drought as they approach the conclusion of the current Belgian league season. Sheffield United The Blades surprised many by finishing a comfortable second in their first season back in the top flight. During the 2022-23 campaign, they were minutes away from winning the championship. This meteoric return has garnered the interest of football fans around the country.
The club dating back to 1897 has a rich history. It captured 11 league championships from 1904-35. Even that was short-lived with a dramatic drop-off soon after in the early 1960s as they were demoted from the first dupre. In the ensuing years, Union Saint Gilloise fell as low as Belgium’s fourth division. After a five-year battle out of the top tier, they earned promotion to the Bundesliga in 2021.
Player recruitment Tony Bloom, owner of English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, has led the club’s ownership. With this new commitment on recruitment and analytics, under his stewardship, Union Saint Gilloise have taken huge strides. Chris O’Loughlin, who took over as sporting director at the beginning of the season, emphasizes the club’s strategy of seeking “undervalued, underrated hungry players” to bolster their squad.
Today, the trajectory of that team’s remarkable turnaround is more easily explained by a mixture of leadership and purposeful, strategic recruitment. Their new head coach, a 37-year-old former West Bromwich Albion and Brighton defender. His leadership has effectively driven the team on this fertile competitive season. The roster features well-known players such as Christian Burgess and Kevin Mac Allister. They each have been incredible game changers in moving their campaign forward.
Philippe Bormans, CEO of Union Saint Gilloise, understood the pressures the team would be under this season. He doubled down on their strategy as they proceeded.
“We have all experienced it – including the disappointment – and have taken steps as a club. We know exactly where we stand and what can still happen.” – Philippe Bormans
As the season moves into the final stretch, keeping up the focus will be important for the red-hot squad. After the squad’s impressive performance in Brazil, defender Sebastien Pocognoli provided a glimpse into the team’s nationalistic mindset.
“That experience is important not to look ahead too much and to focus on the next match.” – Sebastien Pocognoli
Union Saint Gilloise continues to demonstrate resilience and determination. More than that, I think it’s their ability to create a positive culture within that team, which has been key to their success. Pocognoli reinforced this sentiment by stating,
“The atmosphere is the same as at the start of the play-offs.” – Sebastien Pocognoli
