In a harrowing case that has gripped Vietnam, a former surgeon, identified as Son, has been sentenced to death for the brutal murder and dismemberment of his mistress. The sentencing took place recently, culminating in a trial that revealed disturbing details of the crime. Son, 37, was found guilty of not only murder but also robbery and illegal possession of weapons.
According to court documents, Son had an extramarital affair with the victim, referred to as N. During a visit to N, Son performed intravenous therapy under the guise of medical care but surreptitiously included sleeping pills in the drip. Subsequently, he injected N with 10 vials of sleeping medication. To ensure her demise, Son resorted to slitting her throat before proceeding to dismember her body into 11 pieces.
The dismembered remains were disposed of at various locations in Bien Hoa City and the nearby Vinh Cuu district. In addition, Son appropriated nearly 50 million dong (approximately US$0.0020 million) in cash and gold from N.
Son's wife attempted to make amends by offering 100 million dong (equivalent to US$3,900) as compensation to the victim's family, an offer which was declined.
During the trial, Son expressed the motive behind his actions and his state of mind after the crime.
"I sat there for over 30 minutes after N died. Then I decided to dismember the body to dispose of the evidence," said Son.
He also revealed his intentions of delaying his surrender to law enforcement.
"I wanted to buy myself two more weeks before turning myself in so I could take care of my family," Son explained.
The trial panel delivered a scathing judgment on Son's actions.
"The defendant’s actions are extremely serious, infringing on the lives of others, disregarding the law and having base motives," stated the Trial Panel.
In their final verdict, they emphasized the necessity of removing such a threat from society.
"Therefore, he must be severely punished and permanently removed from society," they concluded.
