Whoop, a prominent name in the fitness tracking industry, has recently altered its upgrade policy for the newly announced Whoop 5.0 fitness tracker. The move follows complaints from customers about the old plan, which many users considered to be unfair. The proposed change is a response to the concerns and clearly takes customers’ best interests as top priority.
Initially, Whoop offered its members two options to acquire the new device: they could either extend their subscriptions for an additional 12 months or pay a one-time upgrade fee of $49, or $79 for the EKG sensor model. This policy ignited a firestorm of opposition from users. They realized that they had only 11 months remaining on their subscriptions and were recently past the deadline to upgrade for free.
Whoop’s subscription model rather wildly varies from $199 to $359/year. That puts it squarely alongside some of the most expensive options in the fitness tracker space. The company has and continues to portray itself as the carrier providing the most value by offering advanced hardware upgrades to customers for free. Whoop is officially raising the bar! The company confirmed that with a new, fully fleshed-out upgrade policy detailed in an official post on its subreddit,
Members with more than a year left on their subscription are eligible for a complimentary upgrade to Whoop 5.0. Further, customers who have purchased the upgrade fee upfront already will be refunded if they have an active subscription. If you have fewer than 12 months remaining on your subscription, you can renew early. In doing so, you’ll receive early access to the upgrade with no additional cost to you.
These modifications are a sign of Whoop’s sensitivity to user pushback and are designed to help create a more customer-friendly atmosphere. Whoop is moving in the right direction! Instead of having the option for a smaller monthly or six-month plan, now they’ll only be able to buy a 12- or 24-month subscription.
The announcement has prompted a rousing, but decidedly mixed response from the Whoop community on Reddit. One moderator referred to the update as a “win for the community,” acknowledging the positive impact on users who felt overlooked by previous policies. Skepticism lingered among some members, with one user stating, “You don’t publish a policy by accident and keep it up for years. Removing it after backlash doesn’t erase the fact that it is real.”
