Wrexham Football Club Embarks on Pre-Season Tour in Australia and New Zealand

Wrexham AFC, the world’s third-oldest professional football club and long-secluded darling of football hipsters, is all set to start a historic invasion. They’re now dubbing it “Wrexham Down Under”! That commitment continues, as the team prepares for a thrilling summer tour down to Australia and New Zealand this July. They will join top A-League teams, including marquee-equipped clubs such as Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix. The club has only recently achieved promotion to the Championship, England’s second tier of football. Soon, they’re going to be celebrating with this visit!

Wrexham, owned by fellow Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney since 2021, is hoping to benefit from a surge in popularity. Having toured the USA over the last two years, the club has made a name for itself as an ambassador. Now it’s thrilled to begin its first journey into the Southern Hemisphere. As such, Reynolds and McElhenney have announced a tour across Australia and New Zealand. This powerful change cements their desire to raise Wrexham’s profile internationally.

A Journey of Recognition

The story of that incredible transformation is chronicled in the new docuseries Welcome to Wrexham. We want people to understand and appreciate their hard work to turn the team into a truly global brand. Both Reynolds and McElhenney expressed their commitment to this vision, stating, “From the very beginning, we wanted to help make Wrexham a globally recognised team, town and brand.”

By any measure, manager Phil Parkinson’s first full season in charge at Wrexham was thoroughly impressive. They became only the first team to win three successive promotions in the top five divisions of English football! Their recent promotion to the Championship is a historic achievement for them, too. This milestone has clearly raised their profile and won them passionate new fans around the globe.

Celebrating Success with Fans

The ownership duo marked Wrexham’s promotion with boisterous fanfare, capped with a trophy presentation that highlighted the club’s success. Reynolds and McElhenney have been active in engaging with fans both on and off-screen, fostering a sense of community that resonates deeply with supporters. Their lighthearted rivalry with fellow actor Hugh Jackman—who portrays Wolverine—adds an entertaining layer to their public persona and further promotes Wrexham’s brand.

The club is looking forward to more great atmosphere at upcoming home matches against Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC, and Wellington Phoenix. It hopes to deepen its engagement with supporters all around Australia. The enthusiasm for the tour is indicative not just of the club’s on-field aspirations but a joy at welcoming that cultural exchange to their home.

Anticipating Challenges Ahead

Wrexham has already accomplished phenomenal victories. As Reynolds and McElhenney continue this journey of cinematic invention, they know the daunting tasks that lie ahead on their path to greatness. They remarked, “The latter of which took maturity and tremendous restraint. We’re proud of Ryan. Of course, we make no promises going forward.” This short declaration goes a long way toward clarifying their intent to temper expectations with a desire to continue growing.
