Social Network X is strategically launching a dedicated vertical video feed to capitalize on the removal of ByteDance apps such as TikTok and Lemon8 from U.S. app stores. This move aims to seize the opportunity created by the ongoing uncertainty surrounding ByteDance's presence in the U.S. market. With the introduction of a new home for videos, X plans to provide an immersive video experience for its U.S. users.
The company has added a video tab to the app's bottom bar, allowing users quick and easy access to video content on the platform. This feature marks X's first official announcement of their video initiative, although the concept of a media tab for videos had previously been previewed by an app reverse engineer. By rolling out this new feature, X intends to directly compete with TikTok, which is currently facing challenges in the U.S. market.

Simultaneously, other social media platforms are also joining the fray to capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding ByteDance apps. Meta, for instance, has announced its video editing app called Edits, designed to rival ByteDance’s CapCut. Meanwhile, X's rival, Bluesky, has also launched its own custom feed for vertical videos, adding further competition to the landscape.
In addition to the video tab, X is launching a standalone TV app that will showcase videos from various organizations and creators. This initiative underscores X's commitment to providing a comprehensive platform for video content and enhancing user engagement.
X's previous attempts at creating a new home for videos have paved the way for this latest development. The company aims to establish itself as a formidable player in the U.S. video content space by leveraging the current market dynamics and providing users with a seamless and engaging experience.
