YouTube is piloting a new two-person Premium subscription tier, designed to allow users to share a subscription at a reduced cost. This measure, first reported by Money Control, is intended to provide greater flexibility and value for subscribers. Leak testing for this plan has already started in several countries, including India, France, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Their new two-person Premium plan has only been available for a few months! This comes on the heels of YouTube launching a lower-cost Premium Lite subscription earlier in March at $7.99/month. This plan allows users to enjoy “most” videos ad-free but does not include all the benefits of the full Premium offering. The news of the Premium Lite service was first broken by TechCrunch.
YouTube is quickly trying to scale up their subscription play! Just last month, Spotify rolled out its long-awaited Premium Lite plan to the United States, Australia, Germany and Thailand. The platform is working to cater to a range of audience tastes. Completely by rolling out the new two-person Premium plan, it tactically gives users more affordable, pain-based options.
This announcement was made at the conclusion of an awesome TechCrunch Disrupt event, which was held in Berkeley, California, on June 5. As panel moderator Aisha Malik, consumer news reporter at TechCrunch, laid out a new frontier of subscription services. Since coming on to TechCrunch in 2021, Malik has continued her passion for highlighting digital culture and consumer trends. She has an honours bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto. Further, she received a master’s in journalism from Western University.
“We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option in some countries, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost.”
